Fact: We live in Utah.

Fact: Winter lasts a long time in Utah.

Fact: My children need a way to get some of the wiggles out while staying warm indoors during these long winters.

Behold the joy of hopscotch!

Here’s the indoor hopscotch set we got Pearl for Christmas this year:

It’s been a big hit. Just some of the concepts it teaches (well, helps to teach. It is an inanimate object after all.):

  • Coordination–Getting the marker on a pre-determined number is tricky for a toddler!
  • More Coordination–Jumping and hopping (especially on one foot) are big deals in our house right now.
  • Number Sequence–A little reinforcement never hurt anybody.
  • Number Identification–Working on those 6’s and 9’s.
  • Fair Play–Taking turns and waiting patiently. Both concepts that most toddlers struggle with a bit, I think.
  • Control Over Your Own Emotional State–Like when your 1 year-old little brother decides he’d like to chew on your lovely hopscotch set, pull it apart while you are playing, and/or sit smack dab in the middle of the set during your turn.

From a mother’s standpoint, I couldn’t be happier with the quality of this particular set. The foam is soft and cushy, while still sturdy enough to withstand the hours of jumping, bending, and general smashing. The bright colors are cheerful and inviting. Just putting the set together is its own game. And when it’s too cold or snowy outside to go play on the swings, this makes for some great physical activity.
